Michael Bockemühl ranks among the most interesting practitioners of perception and image theory of the last few decades. With his exemplary procedures of visual analysis he expanded the strictly defined theoretical frameworks of art history, developed an epistemology of the conception of painting, and anticipated some of the theoretical observations of relational aesthetics. His formula of 'image reception as image production' and texts on the relation between aesthetics and economy can be understood as an action-oriented theory of knowledge. This book offers a survey of his work and uses selected texts to introduce his pioneering procedures of pictorial and perceptual analysis.

Michael Bockemühl (1943-2009) war deutscher Kunstwissenschaftler. Er erhielt 1990 einen Ruf auf den Lehrstuhl für Kunstwissenschaft, Ästhetik und Kunstvermittlung der Universität Witten/Herdecke, wo er bis zu seinem Tod lehrte. Bockemühl veröffentlichte zahlreiche Schriften und Monografien zu Rembrandt, Turner und zur Kunst der Moderne. Weitere Forschungsschwerpunkte lagen im Bereich Theorie der Bildanschauung, Gegenwartskunst, Wirtschaftskultur und Kunstvermittlung. Karen van den Berg, geb. 1963, hat seit 2003 den Lehrstuhl für Kunsttheorie und inszenatorische Praxis an der Zeppelin Universität in Friedrichshafen inne. Claus Volkenandt, geb. 1963, lehrt an verschiedenen Universitäten in Deutschland und der Schweiz. Seit 2012 ist er Professor für Kunstwissenschaft an der Universität Witten/Herdecke.
